Mells daffodil festival Easter Monday

1979 – 2019: Our fortieth anniversary

The first Mells Daffodil Festival was held in 1979. It was the initiative of Mrs Joyce Barber, who was in turn inspired by the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend in Hertfordshire - they are still going and are in their 50th year! Our archive includes  a letter from the vicar of Thriplow offering advice.

Mrs Barber was highly active as a village volunteer: churchwarden, and organiser of the Over Sixties club. She used to run a meals on wheels service using an old pram for deliveries.

In the early years, the street stalls were restricted to New Street (the small street leading up to the church).

These pictures show Mrs Barber organising the Daffodil Queen contestants. We're not sure when these photos were taken. In the archive we found them labelled 'the first festival' and also 'early 1980s'.

We'd love to hear from you if you have early memories or photos.
