Town Criers

Our competition (1.0pm at the War Memorial) to appoint the best Town Crier at the Mells Daffodil Festival, will be between some of the best criers in the south-west representing towns across the region.  And alongside this competition is one for the best-dressed escort.  So expect a colourful, humorous and entertaining spectacle!

For centuries Town Criers were appointed to inform the population of matters of national importance, such as Royal events, executions etc, and local issues such as lost dogs, and various newsworthy items.  Often the role was passed down through the generations and it was seen as a position of standing in the community.

Town Criers carry a bell with which to gain attention, and a scroll giving the substance of their proclamation.  It is important that a Town Crier has a loud, clear voice.  Traditionally they call for attention with “Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! (from an old French expression for “listen!” or “Hear Ye!”, and finish with “God Save the Queen!” (or King).

There are some 200 Town Criers in Britain – about 10% of them are here!  They are in great demand for civic ceremonies, charity functions, tourism events, weddings and private functions, where their colourful costumes, imposing presence and historical significance provide great interest.  So come along and see if your local crier is here.

Morris Men

Also at the War Memorial – The brightly coloured lively Morris dancers will entertain you throughout the day with their traditional style and fun performance.
